Not necessarily, and asking once yourself won't tell you. Shoppers ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google things like which backpack brand is good for commuting or which rice cooker brand suits a small family, and AI lists a few brands, sometimes with review articles or shop pages as sources. Different wording, different platforms and different times can all produce different brands. To know whether you're in the answer, check several AI platforms at once with the questions shoppers really ask, then look at three things: whether you're mentioned, which brands AI recommends and which sites it relied on.
Why asking once yourself isn't reliable
Many owners open ChatGPT, type their brand name and relax when AI can describe them. But shoppers usually don't type your brand name; they ask which brand to buy, often with conditions such as budget, use, who it's for and where to buy it. Being found by name doesn't mean you show up when someone asks for a recommendation. AI answers can also change each time, and if ChatGPT mentions you, Gemini or Google AI Overviews may not. One question on one platform isn't a conclusion.
How shoppers ask
Start by listing how shoppers might ask. Most questions fall into four types: asking directly for a recommendation, comparing two options, asking about a specific need, and asking about what happens after buying.
| Type of question | Example | What AI needs |
|---|---|---|
| Direct recommendation | Recommend a backpack brand for commuting | Who the brand is, its main products, who they suit |
| Comparison | Brand A or brand B backpack for office workers | Specs, materials, capacity and other facts that can be compared |
| Specific need | A light backpack that fits a 15-inch laptop | Dimensions, weight, what it can hold |
| After buying | Are this brand's warranty and returns easy | Warranty, shipping times, return and exchange policy |
The fourth type is often overlooked. When a shopper asks whether returns are easy with a brand and your site doesn't say, AI may quote forum discussions or simply leave you out. So when you list questions, include a few about after-sales service, not just which brand to buy.
Three things to look at afterwards
- Whether you're mentioned: in how many questions, on which platforms, and whether you're recommended or only mentioned in passing
- Who you lose to: which brands AI recommends in the questions where you're missing, and how their product pages differ from yours
- Which sites AI relies on: review articles, comparison posts, forums and marketplace pages; which include you, which don't and which are out of date
The third is often skipped, but it decides what to fix first. When AI recommends a brand, it's often because the sites it read include that brand's details; when it leaves you out, it's often because those sites don't mention you or carry old information.
How to check with GEO by TriloAI
Start with the free quick scan: enter your website URL in GEO by TriloAI, no sign-up, about 1–2 minutes, to see whether ChatGPT can read your site. For the full picture, run the five-platform check: up to 15 questions shoppers ask, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Claude at once. The report shows how you're mentioned, which brands you lose to, which sites AI relied on and the three things to do first. Brands selling abroad can pick Taiwan, the US, Japan, Korea, China or Global, with reports in 5 languages.
What to do first after the check
Line up the three things the report says to do first. They usually fall into three areas: clearer product and brand pages, structured data and FAQs, and mentions on the other sites AI relies on. Once done, keep the same questions and test again. Each platform updates at its own pace, so changes usually take a few weeks to show; record no change as no change, then decide the next step.
The short version
To know whether you show up when shoppers ask AI to recommend a brand, don't ask once; use shoppers' own questions across several platforms, then look at which sites AI relied on.
Frequently asked questions
- Will AI recommend a small brand?
- Size isn't the only factor. AI cites information that answers the question; a small brand with clear product pages and mentions in reviews or comparison posts can also be mentioned. Check where you stand first, then decide what to fill in.
- I only sell on marketplaces. Can I still check?
- You can check whether AI mentions your brand name. The free quick scan asks for a website URL; if you don't have one, we can look at how to check together in the free 30-minute consultation.
- How long does a check take?
- The free quick scan takes about 1–2 minutes and checks ChatGPT only. The full five-platform check runs up to 15 questions across 5 AI platforms at once.
- Will being mentioned by AI increase sales?
- Not necessarily, and nobody can promise that. Being mentioned only means shoppers can see you when they ask; after that, product pages, price, reviews and after-sales service still matter. We record AI results and website orders separately.
