On September 25, 2026, n8n formally introduced n8n Agents on its official blog. It is a new kind of AI agent: you write a goal, pick a model, and give it tools and workflows, and it works out the steps itself; n8n says it is still in preview. For Taiwanese SMEs that already use n8n, or are thinking about it, this adds a way to handle open-ended work on top of fixed workflows.
1. What happened
According to n8n's September 25 post, Agents are a new feature that sits alongside workflows. The same agent can talk with people in Slack, run on a schedule, or be called from a workflow; the new Message an Agent node lets a workflow use an agent as one of its steps. Agents can also use existing workflows as tools.
n8n also made a few points clear. The existing AI Agent node has not changed. Each agent comes with memory, sessions, channels, versions and approvals built in. One turn with an agent counts as one execution; workflows or sub-agents it calls during that turn are not counted separately, and agents share the workflow execution quota.
On availability, the official post says agents are available to everyone on the latest stable version of n8n Cloud, while community self-hosted setups need extra configuration; it lists Slack, Telegram, Linear, Discord and schedules as channels and triggers. An n8n community forum announcement on August 5 said Agents are available in preview from version 2.32.3. Neither official source mentions LINE.
| Comparison | Workflows | n8n Agents (preview) |
|---|---|---|
| How it runs | Follows the steps you laid out on the canvas | Plans its own steps toward a goal |
| Good for | Fixed steps that are the same every time | Open-ended, back-and-forth work |
| How it starts | A trigger, such as a form submission | A chat in Slack or another channel, a schedule, or a call from a workflow |
| Sensitive actions | Follow the flow you designed | Can pause and wait for human approval |
2. What it means for SMEs in Taiwan
Our view: most SME automation needs, such as filing a form submission or sending a notice when an order comes in, have fixed steps; a normal workflow is enough and its results are easier to predict. Agents fit work that changes each time, such as looking things up first and then drafting a reply for a person to check.
Because it is still in preview, n8n itself advises testing before publishing and keeping approvals on sensitive actions. Customers in Taiwan are mostly on LINE, and LINE is not among the channels n8n lists right now; connecting LINE still goes through a workflow. We suggest starting with internal, low-risk tasks, not letting it reply to customers or change data on day one.
3. What you can do now
- List repetitive work in your company and split it into fixed-step tasks and tasks that need judgment each time; handle the first group with normal workflows.
- If you already use n8n Cloud, pick one internal task to try Agents on, such as a weekly order summary for a manager.
- If you self-host n8n, check your version and the extra setup the official docs require, and don't switch it on in production first.
- Set every tool that sends email, changes data or replies externally to require human approval.
- Track monthly executions and model usage, and decide whether to expand only after a trial period; costs follow official announcements.
The short version
n8n Agents give automation the ability to handle open-ended work, but they are still in preview, so start with internal, low-risk tasks that a person signs off on.
Frequently asked questions
- How are n8n Agents different from the existing AI Agent node?
- n8n says the AI Agent node has not changed. Agents are a separate kind of agent with built-in memory, sessions, versions and approvals, and the same agent can be used in Slack, on a schedule and inside workflows.
- Can it connect directly to a LINE Official Account?
- The official post lists Slack, Telegram, Linear and Discord as channels and doesn't mention LINE. To use LINE, you can have a workflow receive LINE messages and then pass them to an agent with the Message an Agent node.
- Will Agents cost a lot more?
- According to n8n, one turn with an agent counts as one execution and shares the workflow execution quota; model usage is charged separately. Costs follow official announcements, so start small and track usage.
